Gilas is Getting There

8:35 AM

If you look at the current results of the Smart-Gilas experiment that started in 2009, you won’t find yourself fraught with excitement or optimism. It’s not exactly the monumental turnaround for Philippine basketball that a lot of people might have expected.

Consider.

5th place in the 2009 FIBA-Asia Champions Cup held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
3rd place in the 2010 Dubai International Basketball Tournament held in, well, Dubai (duh), UAE.
Champions in the 2010 MVP Cup held here in Manila.
4th place in the 2010 Jones Cup in Taipei, Chinese-Taipei.
4th place in the 2010 FIBA-Asia Stankovic Cup in Beirut, Lebanon.
2nd place in the 2010 Asian Basketball Association Club Championship in Haining, China.
7th place in the 2010 FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in Doha, Qatar.
4th place in the 2011 FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in Manila.
*I chose not to include their PBA stints anymore, since I wanted to focus on how they’ve done in the international circuit only.

Only one title. 2 other podium finishes. Not particularly stellar right?

B-MEG LLAMADOS over BGY. GINEBRA KINGS, 82-67
B-Meg coach Tim Cone insisted, somehow, they have Meralco to thank for in drawing first blood in their semifinal duel with Barangay Ginebra.

Toughened up by their highly physical semis battle with the Bolts, the Llamados showed up the Kings in the opener of their PBA Commissioner’s Cup Final Four.

The Llamados showed physical and mental toughness, overcoming a poor start and winning in runaway fashion. In this series opener, the Llamados climbed out of an early 15-point hole and showed tremendous sustaining power, dominating the Kings in the final half.

The Kings got off to a strong start, but tapered off in the second quarter and failed to recover, terribly missing the services of injured star Mark Caguioa. Jackson Vorman sizzled with seven points, five rebounds and three assists in the opening period, but he himself cooled down in the next three quarters. Probably due to frustration, Vroman lost his cool in his rugged battle with Yancy de Ocampo in the second half. He incurred a flagrant foul penalty 1 for shoving De Ocampo’s face.

Marc Pingris also drew an F1 earlier in a collision with Enrico Villanueva. Pingris’ infraction, however, seemed to fire up his teammates even more. The Llamados made a big turnaround from a 15-point deficit early on, building 20-point spreads in
the fourth quarter and breezing through in what was expected to be a slam bang match.

BML 82 - Bowles 21, Simon 13, Devance 9, Yap 9, De Ocampo 9, Urbiztondo 6, Reavis 5, Intal 4, Pingris 4, Villanueva 2, Barroca 0.
BGK 67 - Vroman 10, Labagala 10, Villanueva 8, Hatfield 8, Cortez 7, Canaleta 6, Helterbrand 6, Ababou 5, W. Wilson 4, J. Wilson 2, Raymundo 1, Mamaril 0.
QS: 8-21, 33-29, 60-42, 82-67

TALK N TEXT TROPANG TEXTERS over BARAKO BULL ENERGY, 123-98
Riding the courageous acts of Kelly Williams and Donnell Harvey, Talk n Text sprang
back strong from its Game One defeat, clobbering Barako Bull in the second game of their PBA Commissioner’s Cup best-of-five semifinal showdown.

Williams and Harvey both played through pain, providing the Texters a big push as they got back at the Energy, avenging their 77-84 loss in the series opener. Talk n Text coach Chot Reyes said the key was that they held their ground in Game Two.

Williams and Harvey showed their teammates the way, enduring their injuries as they fought through. The two bucked their injuries, combining for 36 points, 18 rebounds, six assists and six blocks. They were right there as the Tropang Texters went on a rip-roaring run in the fourth quarter to win the game with plenty to spare.

Ranidel de Ocampo proved to be a big matchup problem for Barako early on with the agile forward connecting practically from all over as the Texters took the half at 55-45. The former St. Francis Assisi stalwart knocked in three triples, four twinners and a charity for 18 points that went with three rebounds and one assist in the first 24 minutes of play.

TNT 123 - Harvey 24, De Ocampo 18, Fonacier 14, Reyes 13, Williams 12, Alapag 12, Castro 10, Dillinger 9, Carey 6, Raymundo 3, Gamalinda 2, Aguilar 0, Alvarez 0, Lao 0.
BBE 98 - Freeman 20, Allado 20, Seigle 16, Tubid 10, Miller 10, Aquino 6, Najorda 5, Salvador 5, Pena 4, Arboleda 2, Cervantes 0, Pennisi 0.
QS: 24-25, 55-45, 88-76, 123-98
